Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist

The incumbent serves as a principle technical advisor on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and is responsible for the acquisition and management of the wide range of spatial information required to support the management of public lands. The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following:
Providing technical user support for all aspects of geospatial data and software. Developing and implementing quality control and assurance guidelines for geospatial data projects. Identifying requirements and implementing advanced analytical techniques necessary to solve complex GIS issues. Working with a diverse group of resource specialists, planners, and managers to coordinate and implement GIS activities. Coordinating with managers, resource specialists/technicians, and IT staff to identify GIS hardware and processing needs and developing plans for required upgrades. Promoting and implementing an integrated training program to meet needs and teach basic skills in the use of GIS software, data acquisition, retrieval, and analysis. Assisting in the integration of Enterprise GIS with the long and short term planning and management activities. Providing programming in support of database administration and geospatial applications. Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The work is primarily sedentary, in an office environment, requiring long periods of sitting in one position, intense concentration, and working for several hours at a time. Occasional fieldwork may be required in support of resource mapping projects and may involve extended days of travel, sometimes in poor weather conditions. For GS-11:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include:
compiling geographic data from a variety of sources, digitizing geographic information from raw land-based data into code, implementing quality control and assurance guidelines for geospatial data projects, identifying data needs for specific projects, reconciling coding errors and technical problems, working with local specialists, planners, and manager to coordinate and develop GIS projects. -OR- Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M., if related. -OR- have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education may be combined with experience. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.Equivalent combinations of post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
